"Recycle Your Holidays" Program!

In 2009 the Adult Training and Habilitation Center again partnered with the Recycling Association of Minnesota on Recycle Your Holidays™. The program developed by the Recycling Association of Minnesota and test piloted with ATHC in the summer of 2009, was officially launched in the fall of 2009.

Recycle Your Holidays™ has provided employment to 60 individuals at ATHC since November 1st of 2009. Based on the number of pounds collected and the pace at which the employees at the Adult Training and Habilitation Center can break down the lights, these 60 individuals will continue to be employed until November of 2010. Just in time for the next season of lights to arrive.

The Recycle Your Holidays™ Program resulted in 100,000 pounds of light strands collected statewide during the 2009-2010 season at 175 separate locations. The Adult Training and Habilitation Center collection efforts resulted in 75,000 pounds of the 100,000 pounds collected. Based on calculations provided by the Clean Energy Resource Team, the anticipated energy savings per year will amount to 1,551,481.80 kWh/year and the CO(2) reductions amount to 2,735,782 pounds per year. This is a result of the energy savings from the removal of the bulb (.4) watts each and the energy saved through the capture of the copper wire from the lights through recycling rather than extracting copper through mining.

The 75,000 pounds of lights recycled through ATHC will result in the green house gas savings of 2,051,837 pounds of CO(2) equal to removing 178 vehicles from the road for a year.

The success of the 2009-2010 Recycle your Holidays Program was the result of the successful collaboration of the Recycling Association of Minnesota, WCCO, Xcel Energy, Clean Energy Resource Team, Snyders, Green Lights Recycling and Kirchbaum & Krutch.
